Day 153 - Sunday, September 12, 2021

AT statistics say that you have the highest percentage per capita to see a black bear in New Jersey than anywhere else on the trail. We never saw a Moose hiking in Maine or Vermont but saw 5 moose driving to the trail and we have seen 2 bears driving to the trail; one in Tennessee and the other in Maine. We have 2 more day in NJ to see one hiking; I’m betting we don’t, especially with all the SoBo’s on the move keeping them away.

Today’s hike will continue in NJ from Greenville Road, County 519 (1342.0 NoBo) to Sunrise Mountain Road (1324.9 NoBo) equaling 17.1 miles.

Culver Fire Tower. There were 3 men set up by tower taking advantage of the elevation to operate their ham radios. They do this twice a year as a hobby.

Sunrise Mountain pavilion.

Looking East from Sunrise Mountain pavilion.

Rocky trail across Sunrise Mountain…. A precursor of Pennsylvania perhaps?

The Mashipacong Shelter.

Views from the High Point State Park observation tower.

This must be an original sign - notice how the tree trunk has grown around the sign.

More practice for “Rocksylvania”.

The 220’ high High Point tower; resembling the Washington Monument. This is the highest point in New Jersey.

We finished hiking at 5:00 pm.

Two more days and we’ll be in Pennsylvania.

Till next time... Happy Hiking  ðŸ¥¾

“Acts of generosity in this wild and primitive setting…where basic amenities…are intentionally absent–are often received in a heightened sense of wonder and gratitude by hikers. These acts of generosity are referred to as “trail magic.”
