Day 150 - Thursday, September 9, 2021

It poured most of the night, the trails should be an absolute mess making hiking today like walking a tightrope. I always wondered how the Flying Wallendas felt before each performance.

Because of the rain last night and the forecasted rain this morning we are doing the shorter hike to where we left off before by the Massachusetts / Connecticut border. We will finish Massachusetts tomorrow with the 20+ mile hike. Today we will are hiking from  MA 23 (paved) (1532.3 NoBo) to Jug End Road (1519.4 NoBo) for a total of 12.9 miles.

We began hiking at 10:30 am under cloudy skies… it’s probably going to rain 😝.

Trail conditions are wet but better than I expected after the rain we received last night.

Site of Shay’s Rebellion on the Sheffield Egermont Road.

Walking along in a farm meadow on West Road, Sheffield, MA.

We unexpectedly  met “Splash” coming off Boardman Street. He put in a big day yesterday, 26 miles, that put him farther south. Maybe he will catch up to us in Pennsylvania 😵‍💫.

View from East Mountain.

Gorge on trail descending East Mountain.

The weather forecast was pretty accurate today 🙄 as it did start to rain around 2 pm. Just hard enough to make the rocks and mud treacherous  again…😡.

We finished hiking at 4:30 pm. We made very good time today considering how wet it was 😉.

Tomorrow we finish Massachusetts and move on to resume hiking in New Jersey… keeping patient and focused on the trail. We are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel; or is it a run away freight train coming right at us 🥴?!

Till next time... Happy Hiking  🥾

😋

“Acts of generosity in this wild and primitive setting…where basic amenities…are intentionally absent–are often received in a heightened sense of wonder and gratitude by hikers. These acts of generosity are referred to as “trail magic.”
