Day 149 - Wednesday, September 8, 2021

“Chief Snow” is joining us today for another hike and is still contemplating hiking the 20+ miler with us tomorrow. And I’ve just about finished all the delicious chocolate cake that Tina, aka “Mrs. Chief Snow” sent to us…. molte grazie!

Today we are hiking from Blotz Road (1565.8 NoBo) to US 20, Lee, MA (1553.2 NoBo) equaling 12.6 miles.

We started hiking at 8:30 am.

Living proof that 3 of a kind beats a  pair πŸ˜‰.

Chief Snow flew right up the first climb to Bekert Mountain.

Signing in at the hiker registration box.

It’s official, “Chief Snow” is a certified “Platinum Slack Packing Section Hiker”.

Final hello to “Splash”. We have run into “Splash” on several hikes as he is hiking SoBo and we drive south and hike NoBo. After we complete Massachusetts we will “flip” ahead of him as we continue in New Jersey hiking our way to Harpers Ferry. Happy Trails and best of luck in your journey!

Meet “Blue” and “Tadpole”. They  started from Katahdin in mid June. We have passed each other numerous  times as we slack pack our way through Vermont and Massachusetts. After several confused looks after we pass each other every day, we told them our story πŸ˜‚ .

The October Mountain Shelter. This shelter has 4 bunk beds and an upstairs overhang bunk area to accommodate hikers. This shelter has a surveillance trail cam on it to monitor vandalism. I wonder how many hikers never see it πŸ€”.

Washington Mountain Norway Spruce reforestation project.

Low flying military helicopter flying over  Washington Mountain on maneuvers.

The Washington Mountain Road access.

“Chief Snow” joined the Faceplant Club at about 4:45 pm when he slipped in the mud, almost recovered when a root finished him off… down he went almost breaking his trekking poles πŸ˜‚. No blood, no foul. Mud & Roots 1 - “Chief Snow” 0 😡‍πŸ’«.

Due to the weather forecast we are switching up our hike sequence to do a shorter hike tomorrow and then the 20+ mile hike on Friday.

“Snow Chief” finishing his hike and AT section hike adventure. “Chief” is hanging up his trail runners and backpack for another day. He tore the trail up showing us what a real “American Tracker” does when they are on the move. He would have made his ancestor Chief Joseph Snow proud πŸ‘πŸ». Γ“:nen ki' wΓ‘hi

Till next time... Happy Hiking  πŸ₯Ύ

πŸ˜‹

“Acts of generosity in this wild and primitive setting…where basic amenities…are intentionally absent–are often received in a heightened sense of wonder and gratitude by hikers. These acts of generosity are referred to as “trail magic.”

                  (Appalachian Trail Conservancy)

  1. You two, Splinter and Turtle Power, are insane thru-hikers!!! I hiked only a small piece of what you hiked in total and my hike terrain was nowhere near the difficulty you have done! Thank you for letting me join you guys for a few days!
