Day 146 - Sunday, September 5, 2021

Happy Birthday Chris 🎉

I’m down to my last set of trekking poles. They have to last 400+ miles to Harpers Ferry. That shouldn’t be to much of an issue as my first set lasted until we hit New Hampshire 🥴😉.

Today we will finish hiking in the Green Mountain National Forest and on the Long Trail when we cross the Vermont/Massachusetts state border. We are hiking from VT 9 Bennington, VT (1613.9) to MA 2, Hoosic River, Williamstowm, MA (1595.5 NoBo) equaling 18.4 miles.

We began hiking at 7:30 am under cloudy skies. Rain is expected this afternoon 😵‍💫🥴😡.

Last set of trekking poles…

A little street walking in Williamstown to start 😉.

How did we end up back in NewHampshire 🥵?

Massachusetts/Vermont state border and southern terminus of the Long Trail.

Well, that didn’t take long. About 6 miles into the hike I slipped and fell breaking not one, but BOTH my trekking poles 😡😵‍💫😬.  I made a quick field repair, more of a cob job, so I could continue. One pole was now 6” shorter but it would have to do.  This fiasco also evened the slip/fall count 😤.

And to add insult to injury, it started raining around 9:30 am… about 5 hours earlier than expected. This is going to be a GREAT hike 😩.

It just got GREATER…Turtle Power took a hilarious fall around 1:00 pm to give me the slip/fall advantage. I wanted to score it a double fall as he first fell to his hands, recovered, then slipped again and went to his knees…😂.

Roaring Branch pond.

The final descent through a steep, wet and slippery boulder field.

We finished hiking at 6:00 pm. I wasn’t too wet but was still happy to put this hike in the books. Good bye Vermont  👋. Four more states to go 😉.

Till next time... Happy Hiking  🥾

😋

“Acts of generosity in this wild and primitive setting…where basic amenities…are intentionally absent–are often received in a heightened sense of wonder and gratitude by hikers. These acts of generosity are referred to as “trail magic.”

  1. Hey - can’t you make a trekking pole if you cut a small “green” tree ?? Probably would last for your final miles !!🤣
