Day 137 - Tuesday, August 24, 2021

Yesterday we got all set up in our Lean-to. Today we are finishing up the trail from Abol Bridge (2178.0 NoBo) to Baxter State Park, hiking the last section of the approach trail  to Katahdin Stream Campground (2187.9 NoBo) at the base of Mount Katahdin for a total of 9.9 miles. This hike should be a “Walk in the Woods” according to the  profile in AWOL, just keeping us loose and relaxed for the ascent on Mt. Katahdin tomorrow.

We began hiking around 9 am as Jenny brought us to the trailhead at Abol Bridge.

They say 3 of a kind beats a pair. We are glad that “Navigator” will be joining us on tomorrow’s summit. His friend that started their journey many years ago had to change his plans about a week ago due to family issues…  we’ve all been there before. I’ll try and keep up with you the best I can.

Crossing the west branch of the Penobscot River at Abol Bridge. Mt. Katahdin behind us.

Footbridge on the Abol Stream Trail; entering Baxter State Park.

Just 9.5 miles left to go for today.

Taking a relaxing break at Big Niagara Falls.

We finished hiking at 3:00 pm; time to go back to the Lean-to and do a few last minute preparations for tomorrow and reflect on what got us here to this junction of our journey…

Till next time... Happy Hiking  🥾

“Acts of generosity in this wild and primitive setting…where basic amenities…are intentionally absent–are often received in a heightened sense of wonder and gratitude by hikers. These acts of generosity are referred to as “trail magic.”
