Day 136 - Monday, August 23, 2021
Yesterday we left Monson and Shaw’s Hiker Hostel to go to Millinocket to prepare to enter Baxter State Park today. “Poet” & “Hippie Chic” (Jarrod & Kim Hester) owners of Shaw’s made our stay a memorable one. They coordinated our “Ultimate Platinum Slack Packing Thru Hike” through the 100 Mile Wilderness without a hitch 👍🏻.
“Hippie Chic”, “Turtle Power”, “Poet” and myself.
We are guest of “Navigator” who invited us to share a lean-to at Katahdin Stream Campground in Baxter State Park at the base of Mt. Katahdin. We entered the campground today and hope to hike the remaining 9.9 miles from Abol Bridge to Katahdin Stream Campground tomorrow.
Jay “Navigator” and Jenny Hood our gracious host. We met “Navigator” on the trail a few weeks ago while in New Hampshire.
Registering for our hiker permit to ascend Mt. Katahdin. Baxter State Park requires every hiker to “sign-in” so they know when you climb and descend Katahdin. They actually make approximately 60 rescues annually for injured hikers who cannot exit the trail on their own ability; some rescues are by the Maine National Guard using Blackhawk helicopters 🚁.
My official AT - Katahdin Hiker Permit… can’t turn back now.
Relaxing at the Lean-to at the Abol Campground. Wednesday is the big day!
😋
“Acts of generosity in this wild and primitive setting…where basic amenities…are intentionally absent–are often received in a heightened sense of wonder and gratitude by hikers. These acts of generosity are referred to as “trail magic.”
(Appalachian Trail Conservancy)
