Day 135 - Saturday, August 21, 2021
Today we completed “slack packing” the entire length of the 100 Mile Wilderness π. This accomplishment officially upgraded our thru hike to the “Ultimate - Platinum Slack Packing Flip-Flop-Flip Thru Hike” and the icing on the cake is that we will never have used our tents π π₯³. You could write a book on this π€.
We are also beginning to mobilize our cars to Abol Bridge to make our exit from Millinocket after we summit Mt. Katahdin; which may be pushed back to Wednesday due to Hurricane Henri. We are meeting “Navigator” Monday to enter Baxter State Park with him. He was generous enough to share his lean-to with us and we will summit Katahdin with him as well. We will more than likely complete the section from Abol Bridge to the Birches Monday/Tuesday… it’s all coming together π.
Today we hiked from Polywog Stream (2160.5 NoBo) to Abol Bridge (2178.0) for a total of 17.5 miles.
We began hiking at 7:00 am .
The Hurd Brook Lean-to.
Mt. Katahdin from the Ledges. It’s becoming hypnoticπ€©.
I saw this little fella cross the trail in front of me… it’s a common Northern Ring Neck Snake which are typically nocturnal so I was lucky to see it.
I noticed this fungus growing on this log… it surely caught my eye. I haven’t got a clue what kind it is. Does anyone know?
The M.A.T.C. (Maine Appalachian Trail Club) refurbishing the Rainbow Stream Lean-to. All their trail maintenance is done by hiking/outdoor enthusiasts volunteers. Thank you!
Looking upstream on the Polywog Stream.
We finished hiking at 4:00 pm. One hike closer to Katahdin!
π
“Acts of generosity in this wild and primitive setting…where basic amenities…are intentionally absent–are often received in a heightened sense of wonder and gratitude by hikers. These acts of generosity are referred to as “trail magic.”
(Appalachian Trail Conservancy)
