Day 130 - Monday, August 16, 2021

Morning temperatures were 3° cooler than yesterday, waking up to 50°. We will be leaving Maine just in time to beat the cooler weather; hopefully summiting Mt. Katahdin on the 22nd or the 23rd 🙏🏻.

Today we are continuing hiking from Otter Pond parking (2093.8 NoBo) to Katahdin Ironworks Road (2108.4 NoBo)  for a total 14.6 miles plus the .8 mile hike to the trailhead

We started hiking at 6:00 am under near dark conditions.

Sunrise over Barren Mountain.

Early AT trail marker.

View from Barren Mountain.

Fourth Mountain Bog.

Some hiker marked the trail with their unofficial mileage from Springer… 93.1 miles to Katahdin.

View from Third Mountain, Monument Cliff.

This is “Halo” who started from Springer on February 16th. “Halo” is from Missouri. He is a house painter who gave his employer his 2 week notice and hit the trail. He miscalculated his food/snack rationing and asked if I had any food I wanted to sell. I gave him an extra granola bar that I had in my pack.

Getting further into the 100 Mile Wilderness and closer to Katahdin. We are expecting to be able to try and summit as early as next Monday. We have a few options to get into Baxter State Park- seems like a lot of bureaucratic red tape just to summit Katahdin 🙄🥴.

Till next time... Happy Hiking  🥾

😋

“Acts of generosity in this wild and primitive setting…where basic amenities…are intentionally absent–are often received in a heightened sense of wonder and gratitude by hikers. These acts of generosity are referred to as “trail magic.”
