We have officially completed 54% of the AT, having hiked from Harpers Ferry, WV to Springer Mountain/Amicalola Falls, Georgia, all of New York and the northern portion of New Jersey. We have “flipped” our way back north on our “Platinum Slack Pack Flip-Flop-Flip Thru-Hike”.
Looking back at the past few months hiking along the majestic Appalachian Trail, the trail can quickly humble you. You may not remember each step but you certainly don’t forget them either. We have been through the Shenandoah Valley/Blue Ridge Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains. I have experienced once in a lifetime and unparalleled memories that will never be forgotten.
I often said… “you are always just one step from leaving the trail!” It is sometimes mentally exhausting navigating your way along the trail to avoid it; especially if you are already nursing an injury. You can get so focused with taking each step that you sometimes miss the natural beauty that surrounds you. It’s forever in your subconscious; the rawness of the trail and how unforgiving it can be.
“Nana Korobi, Ya Oki”
This Japanese proverb which translates “ fall down 7 times, get up 8” signifies the Japanese’s fortitude and resilience. This was discussed at length at one of my Instructor/staff meetings by Grandmaster Crandall. Never give up, striving to do the best one can was the focal point of his message to us. I have used this to persevere and finish several hikes when I was being physically challenged. One day when my Achilles tendinitis was being rather bothersome I had to focus on my breathing and positioning my foot which did get me through the day. I have never forgotten “Nana Korobi, Ya Oki”. It is a valuable lesson that can help one in your daily Life and challenges, whatever they may be.
I look forward to our “flip” north to Katahdin. Then our “flop” south finishing in Harpers Ferry. It’s also nice to be closer to home to be in contact with Jean, Erin and the rest of my family and friends. The solitude of the trail can wear on you. It still amazes me how many solo hikers are on the trail. Teaming up with Turtle Power certainly does make it more fun!
So we are getting back on the trail. And everything you hear about pack weight is true. Turtle Power and I both have reconfigured our packs, even bought some ultra lightweight equipment to lighten the load. We are resuming our adventure in Connecticut, jumping right in the middle of “tick alley”… we will be keeping our deet handy for sure. Onto the White Mountains and the 100 Mile Woods!
Remember, “it’s just a walk in the woods”…
Happy Independence Day America πΊπΈ !
Till next time... Happy Hiking π₯Ύ
