Day 109 - Wednesday, July 21, 2021
Finally getting caught up on my blog as we went right from this 3 day/2 night hike right to another 3 day/ 2 night hike taking on Mt. Washington and the infamous President’s of New Hampshire and the White Mountains.
I hear one of my avid followers, Bob Runkle, was looking forward to me getting “back on the grid”. Bob is recuperating from a total knee replacement and just recently started walking laps at the high school track. It’s too bad that the USA Olympic Team filled all their slots as a I’m sure Bob was ready to compete 😉! Anyways, enjoy Bob!
Day 2 of our hike, continuing from the Guyout Shelter (1835.8 NoBo) to the Mt. Lafayette, Greenleaf Hut (1826.4 NoBo) equaling 9.4 miles. We left the shelter at 7:30 am.
Sunrise off the shelters front deck…..
Climbing Mt. Garfield.
At the summit of Garfield… no view as the cloud cover was low.
Climbing Mt. Lafayette in the rain… winds picked up, gusting to 50 mph when we got above the tree line and the cloud cover made traversing the trail very challenging. The Greenleaf Hut was 1.2 miles off the AT so we were scrambling to make the Hut by nightfall under high winds, rain and poor visibility.
New Hampshire rolled out the red carpet for us today… rocks, rocks, more rocks , wet slippery rocks and more wet slippery rocks.
We safely got to the hut around 7:30 pm. It never felt so good to put on dry clothes and have a hot cup of coffee. Dinner was served and it was lights out for this beat up hiker.
Till next time... Happy Hiking 🥾

“Acts of generosity in this wild and primitive setting…where basic amenities…are intentionally absent–are often received in a heightened sense of wonder and gratitude by hikers. These acts of generosity are referred to as “trail magic.”
(Appalachian Trail Conservancy)
Surprising, no falls today under these wet-rocky conditions! Keep up the great work!!!
