Day 89 - Saturday, June 12, 2021
It was overcast and very humid this morning. Overnight temperatures didn’t go below 65°. We are making our final SoBo approach hike today that will set us up for reaching Springer Mountain tomorrow.
Today we hiked from Gooch Gap/Cooper Gap Road, USFS 42 & 69 (16.9 NoBo) to the Springer Mountain Approach Parking Lot (1.0 NoBo) equaling 15.9 miles. Tomorrow we will reach the Southern Terminus then continue down the Springer Mountain Approach Trail to the Amicalola Visitors Center.
We began hiking at 9:45 am. It took us longer than expected to drop the cars off back on the USFS roads. It was almost 1 1/2 hours just to get to the starting trailhead.
It was a beautiful hike through the Georgia forest.
I told Turtle Power that I saw a candy bar in there... 😂🙄.
There were a lot of day hikers on the trail. Even more so as we are so close to Springer Mountain and Amicalola.
Then we met “Two Piece” (as in two piece chicken). Actually I think we passed each other yesterday but today we had a chance to chat. “Two Piece” began his SoBo thru-hike last August from Katahdin; left the trail around October due to snow and resumed his thru-hike this year. He will make Springer today. Congratulations “Two Piece” for completing your AT thru-hike and becoming one of the 20 %ers 👍🏻.
Looks like Turtle did find something to eat in the tree trunk 🤢... just stopping for our midday break.
Just one more mile... tomorrow is going to be a good day!
I would just like to take this opportunity to wish our neighbor back home and one of my blog’s avid followers, Bob Runkle Sr. “Good Luck” and a speedy recovery on his knee replacement surgery this week... What some people will do to get out of mowing the lawn 😉!
Till next time... Happy Hiking 🥾
