Day 87 - Thursday, June 10, 2021

The forecast has improved where we should stay dry today but tomorrow’s forecast is now calling for rain most of the day - give it a few hours and it may change for the better; it can’t get much worse 🤨😖.

We decided we are going to finish at Springer Mountain, the southern terminus, then continue down the approach trail to Amicalola. Going to Amicalola is not required as part of a thru-hike. To make a comparison the Amicalola Approach Trail to Springer Mountain is what the Preamble is to the US Constitution 🤔; many hiking “purist” consider it part of the AT even though the ATC does not.  And hiking the Amicalola Approach Trail would put us over 2200 miles when completing the entire AT. 

Most NoBo thru-hikers start at Amicalola to go to Springer Mountain to begin their official NoBo leg. Well, they have no choice other than getting shuttled in to a near parking area then they have to hike 1 mile SoBo get to the Southern Terminus to begin their NoBo hike so they just hike it  🙄🤔. Besides, they aren’t doing the “Platinum Slack Pack Flip-Flop-Flip Thru-hike” and don’t have the means of transportation that we have 😉.

Today we are hiking from Hogpen Gap, GA 348 (38.2 NoBo) to Flatrock Gap (30.2 NoBo) equaling 8.0 miles which is aligning us for our final approach to Springer Mountain!

We began hiking at 9:30 am under partly cloudy skies and the temperature was 67°.









The higher elevations were overcast with fog. There were no views to see.











Look who we ran into again - Jack! He was just finishing his hike. We chatted for another 20 minutes. These are the things that make this journey worthwhile and memorable- meeting good people like Jack! 

We finished hiking at 1:25 pm under cloudy skies. It never  rained but looked very ominous at times... 

I heard a good one today.... “people used to cough to hide/cover up when they passed gas. Now since Covid people flatulence to hide when they cough” 🤣😳.

Looks like we may get wet the next couple days but short of a hurricane we will be hiking to stay on track for an October 8th completion of our thru hike 🙏🏻.  Today was not quite a “Nero” but it was a coincidence that it was shorter aligning with our slack packing parking 😉. We hiked  from  PA 645 (1194.0 NoBo) to Pass Under PA 72 & Across PA 443 (1183.2 NoBo) for a total of 10.8 miles. We began hiking at 9:00 am under threatening skies. Pre-gaming thanks to some Trail Magic left in the parking lot. Since before I have been on the trail I can’t recall the last time I drank a real Coke or any soda for that matter; it’s nearly the norm now as you want to consume all the carbs you can 🤭. And it was too early for the PBR 😂. Crossing the old canal at Swatara Gap. Going underneath I-81. The trail wasn’t as rocky today… and I’m not complaining 🥵. There are definitely pros and cons when you compare sleeping in a shelter vs sleeping in your tent. Some pros are:  you will stay drier in inclement weather in a shelter (notice I didn’t say “dry”,  just drier or not as wet 🙄) , you can break camp quicker in the am - not packing up a tent, you have more room (if shelter isn’t crowded) and a biggie is -  you can take a chance and hope to always use the shelters and not pack a tent optimizing base pack weight (this could also be the #1 con if you had to sleep outside in the rain w/o a tent 🤭) just to name a few.  Some cons are: sleeping on a hard floor - which I believe is the #1 con against shelters (getting a good nights sleep is key to rest and rejuvenate your weary body), could be noisy, the little varmints 🐁 sneaking around in the middle of the night,  some hikers don’t have a clue about maintaining their “personal” space or they just don’t care, on occasion you have to deal with some “personalities” (I ju...
