Day 66 - Sunday, May 16, 2021

I thought nights were supposed to get warmer? It was another cool night as the temperature was 42°πŸ₯ΆπŸ₯Ά. Thank God my BigAgnes sleeping bag is performing magnifico as I was warm as toast. Speaking of toast, I didn’t have any this morning as we skipped  the five-star breakfast as it takes too long to eat and get on the trail at a reasonable time. So I had a quick bowl of instant oatmeal and a cup of coffee and was on my way.

Today we continued hiking from Carver’s Gap TN 143, NC 261 (380.5 NoBo) to Iron Mountain (364.5 NoBo) for a total of 16.0 miles.

We came upon trail maintenance workers south of Greasy Creek Gap who turned out to be from the ATC who were building steps on this slope; then they are off to Virginia and then back to Georgia. The person on the left is “Rainfire” who completed his thru-hike in 2019.

Whoever cut this log clearing the trail carved the AT logo into it.

Simulating a face plant... since it was simulated for my blog readers amusement, no meal was accessed πŸ™„. Turtle Power doesn’t need the calories anyways.

Views from Little Rock Knob.

Plaque at Hughes Gap.

Checking the weather update.

The summit of Roan Mountain, elevation 6186 feet.

The trail from the summit through “Cloudland”.

The “Chimney”.

Panoramic view from Roan High Bluff.

We passed the Roan High Knob Shelter but did not stop as we wanted to get off the mountain before dusk. It is the highest elevation shelter on the entire AT.

We finished hiking at 5:50 pm. Due to the low cloud ceiling it will get dark early tonight. We encountered several day hikers who better not dilly dally coming down or they better have headlamps on them.

Till next time.... Happy Hiking  πŸ₯Ύ
