Day 30 - Thursday, March 25, 2021
Today we are hiking from Reservoir Road, Peddlar River Bridge (802.3 NoBo) to US 501, VA 130 (787.3 NoBo) for a total of 15.0 miles.
The weather was overcast and the temperature was 46°. We started hiking at 8:00 am.
Crossing the Michael Norton Bridge.
The John’s Hollow Shelter.
Typical trail switchback not to be confused with a “sideling”. A switchback is a hillside or mountain trail with sharpe descents or ascents depending on your direction of travel. It normally lessens the rate of vertical change when compared to a straight head on vertical attack of the slope. A “sideling” is a hillside trail that follows a contour with no vertical change regardless of your direction of travel.
An example of a typical “sideling”. Okay, so we made the word up but you have to talk about something when you’re hiking all day together 🥴.
The forest is wakening up from its winter sleep. We also saw our first snake on the trail, a small common brown snake.
It was another day of hiking that included another 3000+ ft climb. We finished hiking, in the rain, at 4:00 pm.
Till next time... Happy Hiking 🥾
😋
Silly boys...playing in the road.
